Before Sedation/General Anesthesia

IV Sedation and General Anesthesia

   Don’t - 

  • DO NOT eat or drink ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT prior to your surgery unless advised by your surgeon.  (This includes water, gum, breath mints, etc.)
  • DO NOT wear makeup or earrings.  Keep jewelry to a minimum.
  • DO NOT wear contact lenses.
  • If you are a smoker – NO smoking 48 hours before surgery.
  • DO NOT wear flip flops or sandals.  All shoes must be tied or enclose the whole foot.
   Do -
  • Inform the surgeon if you are taking any special medication on a regular basis.
  • Please follow instructions from your surgeon regarding any medications to be taken prior to surgery. – If informed by the doctor to take medication the morning of your surgery take with the smallest sip of water possible
  • Contact our office prior to surgery if you have ANY change in your health status, i.e., cold, chest congestion, flu, etc.
  • Brush your teeth prior to surgery.  Rinse well, but DO NOT swallow any water.
  • If you have long hair, please pull it back.
  • Do come with a responsible adult who can drive you home. We require that your escort remain in the waiting room during surgery.  After surgery, the escort will be brought back to the recovery area to sit with you and receive post-operative instruction.
  • Do try to be as rested and relaxed as possible.

Inhalation Sedation (Laughing gas)

  • Limit the intake of food or liquid (dairy products) to a light meal up to two hours prior to the procedure
  • Medications prescribed by your physician should be taken unless directed otherwise.  If you would like a different type of sedation/anesthesia than the one you have originally schedule, please contact our office so that we may allow the appropriate resources and time for your treatment.
